Established in 2001, the .NAME universal domain extension is the sole TLD meant for personal sites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are famous by. At first, solely third-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to buy john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed 3rd-level domains remained operational.
